Hace poco decidimos organizar un viaje que fuera especial, buscábamos sol, playa y tranquilidad a finales de abril. Inicialmente no se nos hubiese ocurrido nunca dirigirnos a México, ya que a menudo la gente que se aloja allí suele ser en macro hoteles de todo incluido. En nuestro caso queríamos un lugar más acogedor y personal, un destino que nos permitiera descubrir un trocito más de mundo. Nuestros viajes y alojamientos siempre tienen en común la originalidad, la conciencia eco y el trato familiar. Nada industrial ni de dimensiones descontroladas.
Gracias a los consejos de una buena amiga, decidimos iniciar nuestro viaje hacia Tulum y Holbox. Así fue como empezó nuestra pequeña aventura Maya, despertando en una cabaña de ensueño en el hotel Papaya Playa Project, y aquí es donde empieza mi primer post.

 

Este hotel es una autentica maravilla. Está compuesto por diferentes cabañas, se puede elegir la categoría según los servicios deseados. Las zonas comunes del hotel esta cuidadas al más mínimo detalle, toda la decoración es propia de la zona y los diferentes espacios te hacen sentir en el paraíso. Personalmente me encantó el “beach club” donde desayunábamos con el ruido del romper de las olas y unas vistas inmejorables.

El hotel dispone de una playa privada para sus huéspedes, es suficientemente grande para que los clientes no se molesten entre ellos, se pisa arena blanca y se respira tranquilidad.

 

 

En la zona hotelera de Tulum hay muchos hoteles del mismo estilo, alojamientos tipo cabañas de diferentes estilos y precios, pero en general todos muy cuidados al más mínimo detalle. Es un buen destino para relajarse, descansar sobre arena blanca y bañarse en aguas cristalinas. Parece un tópico pero en Tulum esta es la realidad.

Durante el día, buscamos actividades para conocer los alrededores. Fuimos a Chichen Itzá, Cenote Dos Ojos, Casa Cenote, Playa de Akumal, Punta Allen ( recorrido en barca por la reserva de la biosfera de Sian Ka’an) Ruinas Mayas de Tulum y a la laguna Yal Ku. Recomiendo todos y cada uno de estos lugares, son increíbles. Los parajes naturales de los alrededores de Tulum son privilegiados, y poder estar en contacto con la fauna de esta manera no tiene precio. Se ven animales por todas partes, des de iguanas (que ya parecen gatos de lo familiares que te llegan a resultar), serpientes, peces, delfines, tortugas, … la naturaleza en su estado más puro.

 

Nos quedamos con las ganas de ir a visitar por lo menos 2 lugares más que nos habían recomendado, los dejamos para la próxima escapada por allí. Nos habían dicho que merecía la pena ir hacia Punta Laguna y visitar el Cenote Sac Actun. Que pena que no nos diera tiempo de visitarlos… pero me alegro de tener muchísimos motivos para volver a visitar este bonito rincón de mundo.

Las excursiones guiadas en general son bastante caras pero merece la pena tener a alguien que te vaya contando las curiosidades del lugar. La única excursión en la cual es imprescindible llevar guía es la de la Reserva de la Biosfera de Sian Ka’an, el resto depende del gusto del consumidor. La que si aconsejamos hacer por libre es la visita a Chichen Itzá, desplazarse en coche propio siempre es mucho más cómodo que ir en autobús, y en el lugar se pueden contratar guías privados para la visita si se desea. No hace falta pre-contratar la excursión con antelación en ninguna agencia, sale mucho más caro.

En nuestro caso alquilamos un coche, es más fácil para desplazarse a las diferentes playas, cenotes, … Antes de llegar a México leímos bastante sobre diferentes empresas de alquiler de vehículos, queríamos evitar sobre-costes de última hora y una buena cobertura. Finalmente alquilamos en Avant Rent a Car, y estamos encantados con el resultado. Buen precio, buen servicio y ninguna sorpresa de última hora.

Finalmente no quería acabar el post sin hablar de restaurantes. La gastronomía local en Tulum es muy buena, en la zona hotelera donde se encuentran los eco-resorts está lleno de pequeños restaurantes y terrazas donde sirven cocina de mercado, cada uno con su especificidad. Esto si, Tulum de barato no tiene nada, y la restauración tampoco. El precio medio de una cena está al nivel de Barcelona.

A continuación añado una lista de los restaurantes a los que acudimos con los pertinentes comentarios, por si os pueden servir de ayuda a la hora de escoger:

• Cenzontle: Cocina mexicana creativa. Se come en una terraza ambientada con luces, velas y incienso. Los platos se elaboran con ingredientes de temporada y se combinan sabores de forma sorprendente. Recomiendo el brownie con chile de postre!
• Casa Banana: Restaurante Argentino buenísimo. La terraza es muy acogedora, llena de luces que dan ambiente al local y una barbacoa en un extremo donde se cocinan la mayoría de los platos. Se come principalmente carne y pescado a la parrilla, pero tienen una carta con ensaladas y otros platos muy elaborados. Sinceramente es muy bueno y nos sorprendió ya que al enterarnos que era una parrilla argentina nos decepcionamos un poco ya que buscábamos cocina más típica del lugar.
• El Tábano: Este también es un restaurante de cocina mexicana. Al llegar tienen unas pizarras donde se encuentran los platos del día, y se escoge un primero y un segundo de la lista. Hay bastante variedad, siempre siguiendo la línea de productos locales y de mercado. En general en Tulum se come muy sano, se tienen mucho en cuenta los productos locales y la cocina regional. La terraza vuelve a ser muy acogedora, sé que me repito mucho, pero merece la pena ver lo bien ambientados que están los locales de la zona. Todo está decorado de forma muy sencilla pero con mucho gusto. Deberían aprender muchas terrazas de alrededor del mundo.
• La Coqueta: Restaurante típico de tacos, fajitas, alambre… pero todo muy rico. La dueña atiende las mesas y ella misma recomienda los platos según los gustos del cliente. Además da recomendaciones sobre lugares para visitar. La zona del pueblo no es tan acogedora como la zona hotelera de Tulum, pero merece la pena ir una noche a este restaurante para comer algo más típico mexicano. Los platos son muy generosos, no hay que pasarse pidiendo demasiado!

Espero no haberos aburrido mucho en mi primer post, intento ser breve pero hay tanto que contar cuando uno vuelve de viaje… en el siguiente post os contaré la segunda parte de la aventura, la que transcurre en la isla Holbox (otro pequeño paraíso mexicano).

We recently decided to organize a special trip, we wanted sun, beach and tranquility in late April. Initially we do not had in mind going to Mexico, because normally people who stays there often goes in macro all-inclusive hotels. In our case we wanted a more cosy and friendly place, a destination that allows us to discover another little piece of world. Our preferred destinations and lodging always have in common originality, eco conscious and friendly service.

Thanks to the advice of a good friend, we change our mind and decided to spend our journey in Tulum and Holbox. That was how our Mayan adventure began, waking up in a little cabana in Papaya Playa Project hotel, and here is where my first post starts.

This hotel is an authentic beauty. It is composed of different typical cabanas, where you can choose the category according to the desired services. The common areas of the hotel are full of charming little details, all the decoration is typical of the area and the different spaces make you feel in paradise. Personally I loved the “beach club” where we had breakfast with the sound of crashing waves and morning breeze.

The hotel has a private beach for guests, large enough to feel lost in paradise.

In the hotel area of Tulum all the hotels are more or less in the same style, all kind of cabanas in a wide range of rates, but in general all very cosy. It is a good destination to rest, relax on white sand and swim in crystal clear waters. It sounds like a cliche but it comes true in Tulum.

During the day, we look for activities to explore the surroundings. We went to Chichen Itza, Cenote Dos Ojos, Casa Cenote, Akumal Beach, Punta Allen (boat trip through the reserve of the biosphere of Sian Ka’an), mayan ruins of Tulum and Yal Ku lagoon. I recommend each and every one of these places, they are all amazing. The natural sites around Tulum are privileged, it is priceless to be in contact with wildlife in this manner. There are all kind of animals everywhere, Iguanas (which they are like cats because you see it everywhere walking around), snakes, fish, dolphins, turtles, … pure nature.

We left with the desire to visit at least 2 more places that someone recommended to us. We had been told it was worth going to Punta Laguna in the road to Coba and visit the Cenote Sac Actun near Tulum. Pity we did not have time to visit all but I’m glad to have many reasons to come again to this beautiful corner of the world.

Guided tours are generally quite expensive but worth it to have someone telling you some curiosities of every place. The only tour which is essential to go with a guide is the Reserve of the Biosphere of Sian Ka’an, in all other places it depends on each one preferences. What we advice is to go at Chichen Itza by car, move in own car is always much more convenient than going by bus, and in place you can hire private guides for the visit if desired. Needless pre-hire the excursion in advance at any agency, it becomes much more expensive.

In our case we rented a car, it is much easier moving to different beaches, cenotes, and other sightseeing places. Before coming to Mexico we read a lot about different car rental companies, we wanted to avoid additional costs and have a good coverage. Finally we rent in Avant Rent a Car, and we are delighted with the result. Good price, good service and no last minute surprises.

Finally I do not want to end the post without talking about restaurants. The local cuisine in Tulum is very good, in the eco-resorts hotel area there is  full of small restaurants and terraces, each one with its specificity. It’s important to say that Tulum is not cheap at all, and restoring either. The average price of a dinner is more or less the same that in Barcelona.

Below, you have a list of different restaurants where we went during our stay  (I’ve made some comments in all of them to help you in your choice):

• Cenzontle: Creative Mexican cuisine. You eat on a terrace plenty of little lights, candles and incense. The dishes are prepared with seasonal ingredients and flavours combine surprisingly. I recommend the chili & chocolate brownie dessert!
• Casa Banana: Great Argentine Restaurant. The terrace is very cozy, full of lights that give a romantic touch to the local environment and a big barbecue where most of the dishes are cooked. You eat mostly meat and grilled fish, but they have a menu with original salads and other elaborated and tasty dishes. Honestly it’s a very nice place and we were surprised because we where a little bit disappointed when we knew it was an Argentinian restaurant because we were looking for a typical Mexican spot.
• El Tábano: This is also a Mexican restaurant. Arriving at the terrace there’s a blackboard with the menu, you can choose a starter and a main-course from there. There is enough variety, always following the line of local specialities and market. In Tulum you generally eat very healthy everywhere, they have much regard for local products and regional cuisine. The terrace is again very welcoming, I know I repeat myself a lot, but everything is decorated very simply but tastefully. Many terraces around the world should learn from there.
• La Coqueta: Typical tacos, fajitas, alambre … but all very tasteful. The owner serves the tables and she recommends you dishes according to your tastes. It also gives you recommendations about typical places to visit. The area of village center is not as cozy as the hotel area of Tulum, but worth going to this restaurant one night to eat something so typical. The dishes are very generous, do not go asking too much!

Hope I have not bored a lot in my first post, I tried to be brief but there is so much to explain when you travel back from a wonderful place … in the next post I will tell you about the second part of the adventure, Holbox Island (another little piece of Mexican paradise).
